    COMPUTER GAMES LIMITED (CGL). British company based in London, England. Their parent company was called Dennis Baylin Trading Ltd. Their main business was importing and badging of games from Tomy, Gakken, etc under the CGL brand name. Were bought by Amstrad and shut down.

In 1982, Intelligent software started a partnership with the UK Berkshire Electronics manufacture (Adam Cung) to produce chess computers equipped with their own chess software under the brand name Chess King.

    CONIC GROUP - Conic was the brand of the CONIC Group.The founder was Alex Au Yan-din. He bought in 1965 a plastic factory that he renamed Chee Yuen Industrial. It was the largest electronics manufacturer in Hong Kong. In 1973, Alex Au incorporated Cony Electronic Products and manufactured cassette tape players and video. In 1975, CONIC INVESTMENT was formed. The firm began manufacturing electronic products such as radio, tape recorders, watches, TV, games and answering machines under its own brands such as Conic, Contec, Audiotronics, Alex and Zegna (in total more than 40 Brands).

    CONSUMENTA is a Munich Based Company, founded by Peter-Ingolf Genicke and Klaus Heyne. Since the beginning of the eighties, were involved in the distribution of products from Fidelity Electronics. In 1981, they created the brand name Conchess for their own chess computers. They recruited the Swedish programmer Ulf Rathsman and decided to manufacture the hardware through an Irish company, Wallharn Electronics.

    CYBER ENTERPRISES, founded by Norbert K. Mikun in 1977. Mikun created CyberChess: despite its name, it is not a computer. However, by the way of decision making algorithms, CyberChess allows to play some great chess games. In September 1977, Dorothy Mikun filled a federal trademark registration for the CYBERCHESS. On the game itself, the name of Norbert K. Mikun is appearing as the owner of the copyright in 1977. The game was ported on personal computers.

    DISCOVERY Inc. Founded in June 17, 1985 by John Hendricks, the company flagship brand is Discovery Channel. The Learning Channel was acquired in 1991. In September 2001, they bought the Health Channel. In May 2021, AT&T announced that it had proposed a merger between Discovery, Inc. and its media subsidiary WarnerMedia, which would be spun off into a new publicly-traded company to be known as Warner Bros. The company was from its beginning involved in the electronic market and in the one of games oriented on Learning.

    WM. F. DRUEKE AND SONS, INC was created in 1914. It is one of the oldest manufacturers of Chess Sets. The company was founded by William F. Drueke at Grand rapids (Michigan). In 1987, they ceased their activities and were sold to Low Tech Company which kept the Drueke name as a brand. In 1990, the Carrom Company bought them and moved the manufacture to Ludington (Michigan). The Carrom Company is still in activity and use the Drueke brand name for their board games.
    This company has its right place here: ARB and Prestige, 2 famous chess computers, were wood boards manufactured by Drueke.

Shane Samole, the President of Excalibur Electronics, became President & Managing Director of New Business Development of EB Excalibur. EB Brands is part of the portfolio of Cortec Fund IV, an investment company. Shane Samole left in 2014 EB Excalibur.

    NICEVENT was located in Moscow and manufactured the Strategist Chess Computer which participated to the First USSR Chess Computer Championship. INTELLECT was the first chess computer Brand Name. Appearing at the First Soviet Computer Championship in 1988, the Intellect-01, programmed by Y. Kubinov, took the sixth and last place of the Tournament. After the competition, the Soviet Computer Chess Federation was founded. Under the brand name ELECTRONIKA, many different Soviet manufactures produced a variety of electronic products as computer systems, calculators, watches, tape recorders, video recorders, portable games, and radios. These products were exported and distributed under various names. Some of them were full copies of foreign technology. KIEV RADIO FACTORY or MAYAK made products including a clone of the Mephisto SchachSchule in 1992.

    FIDELITY ELECTRONICS LD. INC was an American company, founded in 1959, bought in March 1970 by Sidney and Myron Samole. From 1976, Fidelity Electronics developed and manufactured dedicated chess computers. On February 21, 1984, FIDELITY ELECTRONICS LD. INC filed its petition for relief under Chapter 7 of Bankruptcy Code and transferred its ownership to FIDELITY COMPUTER PRODUCTS INC. becoming later FIDELITY INTERNATIONAL,INC. Their computers won the first four World Microcomputer Chess Championships: London 1980 (Chess Challenger ), Travemünde 1981 (Fidelity X), Budapest 1983 (Elite A/S), and Glasgow 1984 (Elite). They won 4 consecutive years the United States Open Computer Chess Championships (Mobile, Alabama) in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. Sold in 1989 to Hegener & Glaser. Fidelity disappeared definitely in 1992.

    A French marketing and manufacturing Corporation founded by Frederic Ries. Installed at the angle of rue Baron and rue Roberval - maybe the origin of the Double R name of the Company (Roberval + Ries). Put on the market the first French Chess Computer "La Regence". France Double R went bankrupt, and Sandy Electronics manufactured and sold a "La Regence" with same wood design (with the button legends in German), but different for its hardware and its software version.

    The Gauselmann Group is a German group, founded in 1957 by Paul Gauselmann. The idea at the origin of the group was the invention by Paul Gauselmann of a remote dial box with a telephone dial for German jukeboxes. More than 300 more patents followed over the years. In the end of the eighties/beginning of the nineties, the Group expanded its operations in USA and to the casinos in Nevada, The group received a manufacturing license for the US state of Nevada and conquered the most important casino market by its innovative products. They took the opportunity to design a Casino Chess Computer table with a money bin... and collaborated with Hegener & Glazer (Mephisto) to do their next Casino machine.

    GAVON is the Brand name of the portable chess computers built by Josu Bergara Ede. Gavon corresponds to the reading of Novag from right to left. The first systems appeared in 2014 (?). Many chess engines are available and many hardware configurations were developed during the last years. The Gavon may be connected to electronic boards.

    Australian distributor and manufacturer (primarily photographic equipment) was founded in 1947 by Jack Hannes (HANnes+ IMport + EXport = Hanimex). Licensed/distributed Chess computers of CXG Newcrest Technology Ltd (CXG Systems). In 1989, Gestetner purchased Hanimex. Some years later, Gestetner was bought by Ricoh in 1995. In 2004, Fujifilm acquired Hanimex from Ricoh and discontinued the use of the Hanimex brand.

    INTELLIGENT SOFTWARE, a British chess software company specialized in research and development of dedicated chess computers. Was founded in 1981 by David Levy and Kevin O’Connell and was the continuity of their company "Philidor Software" founded in 1979. In 1982, in partnership with the UK Berkshire Electronics manufacture (Adam Cung), they started to produce the CHESS KING computers. Intelligent Software went out of business in 1986 for insolvability of one of their clients.

    JS&A GROUP INC. was funded by Joe Sugarman. The company was doing excellent marketing of innovative products, selling by mail and advertising excellently. in 1978, They distributed the MK1 of Novag. To attract the attention of the public, Sugarnman defied Karpov to win against the MK1. On the same vein, Peter Auge of Novag
    recruited Karpov to endorse his line of computers. Unfortunately, bad publicity came with the revelation of the copy of the Compuchess of Data Cash Systems ROM program by Novag. Novag was saved during the lawsuit by a dark story of software copyright propriety.

In 1984, the company was purchased by Hasbro. MB merged with Parker Brothers in 1998 to form Hasbro Games. The two companies were used as brands of Hasbro. In 2009, the parent company's name was substituted on all the products and Milton Bradley brand disappeared.

    NOVAG INDUSTRIES LTD. is a designer and manufacturer of dedicated chess computers founded on September 3 1976 by Peter Auge and Eric Winkler, located in Hong Kong. In 1978, Novag and SciSys started common operations to produce chess computers and notably the MK I. The program was a clone of the ROM of the Data Cash Systems Inc. CompuChess. This results in a lawsuit that JS&S won for a copyright not well documented... A lot of difficulties were emerging between Auge and Winkler and resulted in their separation. In 2009, Novag was sold to a company called Solar Wide Industrial Ltd, . This company continued continued to manufacture chess computers under the Novag brand name..

    PERI SPIELE, Austrian company, located in Scharnstein, founded in 1959 by Erich Perner. Wolfgang Perner succeeded to his father and, in 1984, created PPG Perner Publishing Group, a Swiss branch of Peri. In February 1996, Peri went bankrupt. In 1996, Perner Produktions was founded by Wolfgang Perner. He kept the brand of Peri Spiele. In 2004, Perner Produktions went bankrupt. Their production of chess computers was based on hardware/software from Fidelity electronics, coming essentially from the Fidelity Designer Model.

    RADIO SHACK was founded in 1921 by two brothers, Theodore and Milton Deutschmann. The goal of the company was to provide equipment for the then-nascent field of amateur, or ham radio. In 1962, Radio Shack was purchased by TANDY CORPORATION. In 2000, the Tandy Corporation name was dropped and the entity became the RADIOSHACK CORPORATION. The difference was in the spelling: RadioShack in one word against the 2 words of the original company name.

    SAITEK (originally called SciSys-W until 1987) was a Hong-Kong based company, founded by Eric Winkler in 1978. Eric Winkler was a Swiss technologist who co-founded Novag. During more than 2 decades, Scisys, then Saitek, produced chess computers from Hong-Kong. From 1990, the company distributed its products through its offices in the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. In 1994, Saitek acquired Hegener & Glaser. The brand name Mephisto was used for their products. At this period, Saitek diversified into PC peripherals (game controllers). On November 14, 2007, Mad Catz bought Saitek. On September 15, 2016, Logitech purchased the Saitek brand and assets from Mad Catz.

    SAKKARA TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED, Hong Kong, founded in September 2000. The CEO was Jean-Jacques Japhet. Their European distributors were Jeux Ravensburger S.A. in Spain and S.A.V. Sakkara in France. The company was dissolved in March 2006. The distribution was organized through the French system of Publishers (Jeux Nathan, becoming later Ravensburger after the selling of Jeux Nathan to Ravensburger). Maybe purely coincidental, the name of the CEO is the same that the one of the creator of "L'Empereur".

    SciSys-W Ltd was a Hong-Kong based company, founded by Eric Winkler in 1978. The company was associated with Novag to develop new chess computers. However, Many problems occured between Peter Auge (Novag) and Eric Winkler: they stopped their collaboration after few chess computer development. Winkler renamed the company Saitek in 1987.

    TANDY CORPORATION was founded in 1919 by Norton Hinckley and Dave L. Tandy under the name "Hinckley-Tandy Leather Company". In 1950, the name was changed for Tandy Leathers. At the end of the 50s, Charles Tandy, decided to expand the activities to the hobby market. In 1955, Tandy Leathers was bought by the American Hide and Leather Company. In 1961 the company name was changed to Tandy Corporation . In 1962, they purchased Radio Shack. In 2000, the Tandy Corporation name was changed for the RADIOSHACK CORPORATION. The difference was in the spelling: RadioShack in one word against the 2 words of the original company name.

    VEB Kombinat Mikroelektronik Erfurt was an important manufacturer of active electronic components in East Germany. It was created in 1978. Their first chess computer, the SC1, was produced in few exemplars (probably less than a dozen) essentially with the goal to demonstrate their ability. From there, they regularly produced chess computers until the reunification of the 2 parts of the country in 1990.
